CURRICULUMM

Pre-Collegiate, Career-Focused

BG designed the curriculum for grades 6-12 to provide a holistic education. Students learn to think critically and communicate well. Faculty develop complex thinkers by teaching problem-solving processes and critical thinking scenarios. Instructional strategies target analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating concepts in all academic domains.

While our school’s curriculum meets and exceeds the Pennsylvania Department of Education state standards, our students and teachers are not restricted by the state’s standardized testing. Instead, education at BG is designed by experienced educators using proven methods that develop learners who are prepared academically and personally for higher education; and ultimately for successful careers. BG offers a method of education that is not driven by seat time in a classroom or lecture. Instead, instruction is delivered beyond the classroom structure, not limited by the school bell and four walls.

The school’s methodology is based on research and experience that shows successful learning comes from engaging students to become active learners. Our teachers design lessons that encourage critical thinking, curiosity, and depth of learning. Our students connect deeper to content by applying it themselves (not just memorizing answers).

BG’s learning management system, Canvas, allows a blended hybrid (in-person/online) model of instruction and 24/7 access to content, assignments, and more. It serves as a pathway to post-secondary college and career-driven plans for success. In addition, our learning platform provides a tool to enable teachers’ flexibility to individualize students’ needs and achievements.

HIGHLIGHTS OF BG CURRICULUM

Pre-AP® Preparatory Program – Grades 7 and 8

Bishop Guilfoyle’s challenging Pre-AP® Curriculum, with a selective admission process, is designed to meet the needs of advanced learners to prepare them for the rigor of taking college-level courses while in high school. It uses advanced teaching methods to develop a range of academic skills needed for later success. In addition, it covers high school academic content, freeing later years to take more college-level courses.

Classes are designed to be rigorous preparation for AP® Courses and are intended to be challenging yet beneficial to students demonstrating above-grade-level readings, projects, and activities. The coursework requires students to engage in independent and analytical assignments and complete a substantial amount of work outside the classroom.

6th, 7, and 8 Grade Program

The goal of the 6th – 8th Grade Program is to provide a challenging curriculum in a technologically advanced learning program. It is designed to help students move out of the elementary school mindset and develop a strong sense of themselves, according to the developmental needs in this age range. The goal is that they enter high school well

prepared with the academic preparation and habits needed to take full advantage of our advanced placement and college in high school programs.

One-to-one Technology

At Bishop Guilfoyle, we understand that technologies are vital for students’ futures. Therefore, each student is provided an Apple iPad upon enrollment. The one-to-one technology device transforms the classroom into a learning environment that gives teachers and students unlimited access to worldwide educational resources. In addition, it is also a tool that assists teachers with students’ different styles of learning.

Virtual Education Days

Virtual education days are implemented when school is canceled due to inclement weather and include cross-curricular and interdisciplinary lessons. These days also help students learn independently and take responsibility for their learning. This method is likely the same learning management system they will see in college, making them comfortable when they reach that next level.

Study Abroad Program

Our Study Abroad Program extends the Professors in Residence Program for students who desire to immerse themselves in international culture and education; Bishop Guilfoyle is partnering with Saint Francis University to offer two study abroad opportunities.
